Own website or Instagram/Facebook: what makes more sense for your business

Many small businesses in Portugal start out, and stay, on social media alone, and for a while that's enough. This guide answers the question of when it stops being enough, and what a website does that Instagram or Facebook don't. It's not "one versus the other." It's understanding what each one is actually for, and deciding with that in mind.

What social media does well

Social media is great for showing the day-to-day of the business, testing ideas quickly, and talking directly to people who already follow you. It's where the conversation happens: the stories, the photos of a product fresh out of the oven or the workshop. To start a business from scratch, spending nothing, it's the right place to begin.

What social media doesn't do

You don't own your profile. Instagram can change its algorithm tomorrow and your post can stop showing up to your followers. An account can get suspended by mistake, with no warning and no person on the other end to call. And someone searching Google for "restaurant near me" or "electrician in Almada" doesn't find an Instagram profile the way they find a website. Google treats websites and social profiles very differently in search.

  • You don't control reach or the algorithm
  • Risk of account suspension without warning
  • Weak performance in Google search

What a website does that social media doesn't

A website is yours. It shows up in Google when someone searches for what you do in your area, it acts as a permanent shop window that doesn't disappear if you switch social platforms, and it enables things a profile doesn't handle well: a full menu, a priced catalogue, a booking form, an online store. It's also the only place where you fully control what someone sees first.

It's not either/or, it's about the order

For most local businesses, building a website doesn't mean dropping social media: social still works for direct contact and for showing the business is alive. The website becomes the base, the place social media points to, and what shows up when someone searches for you outside the platform. Think of it in layers: social media for immediate reach, a website for permanent presence and search.

Signs it's time for a website

If you already have real customers, if people ask "do you have a website?", if you waste time answering the same questions in comments (hours, address, prices), or if your whole business depends on a single Instagram profile, those are clear signs a website will pay for itself quickly.

A simple example

A restaurant with an active Instagram profile but no website loses customers who search "restaurant in Almada" on Google, because those results are mostly websites and Google Maps, not social media profiles. The same restaurant with a simple website, with a clear menu and address, shows up in that search and keeps posting on Instagram as normal. It's not about replacing one with the other: it's about having both doing the job each one is actually good at.

FAQ

Questions about website vs. social media

A lot of followers help with reach, but they don't substitute for showing up on Google, and they don't protect you from algorithm changes or a suspended account. They're complementary, not the same thing.

It doesn't have to be. Social media is free to use, and a small professional website has fixed, accessible pricing. What actually costs you is depending on a single channel you don't control.

Yes, and it makes complete sense: the site can show your recent posts, and your social profiles can always point back to the site for bookings, orders or more information.

It depends on the business, but if you already have real customers and want to show up when someone searches Google for your area, the website usually comes first. If you're truly starting from zero, social media is the cheapest place to begin.
