Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps
If you searched for your own business and didn't show up on the map, or showed up far below competitors, there's almost always a concrete reason: it's not "Google doesn't like you." This guide lists the most common causes, in the most likely order, so you can work out which one is yours. If you'd rather understand what local SEO is in general first, the related guide at the bottom of this page covers the concept in more depth.
Your Google Business Profile doesn't exist or is incomplete
This is reason number one. Without a created and verified profile, there's nothing for Google to show on the map. With a profile that exists but is incomplete (wrong category, no hours, no photos), Google has little to go on to trust you over a competitor with a complete profile.
- Does the profile exist and is it verified?
- Is the primary category correct?
- Are the hours up to date?
- Do you have real photos of the business?
Your details don't match up everywhere
If the name, address or phone number are written differently on your website, on Google, on Facebook and on the directories where you appear, Google isn't sure which version is the real one, and that uncertainty works against you on the map. This is called NAP (name, address, phone) and it's one of the most common and easiest-to-fix causes.
Your website doesn't signal that you work in the area
Google cross-checks your profile against your website. If the site doesn't talk about your area, has no real address or clear service area, and doesn't read like it belongs to a local business, that counts against you on the map, even with a well-filled-out profile.
You have few reviews, or none
Reviews are a trust signal for both people and Google. A business with zero or few reviews, on a map full of competitors with dozens, starts at a disadvantage. It's not about having a thousand reviews: it's about having a handful that are real and recent.
Competition in your area is strong
Sometimes everything on your end is correct and the reason is simply competition: in an area with many businesses of the same type, all well optimised, it takes more time and consistent work to climb. This doesn't mean giving up, it means there's no shortcut.
Your profile may be suspended or flagged
Less common, but it happens: profiles get suspended for inconsistent information, competitor reports, or breaking Google's rules. If a profile that used to be visible suddenly disappeared, it's worth checking its status directly in Google Business Profile.
Where to start
Don't try to fix everything at once. Start with the Google Business Profile itself (does it exist, is it complete, is it verified), then confirm your name, address and phone are written the same way everywhere, and only after that look at reviews and what your website says about your area. Each fix adds up, but there's rarely one single change that solves everything overnight.
Questions about showing up on Google Maps
It can take days to weeks for a profile to gain trust and visibility, especially in a competitive area. It isn't instant even when everything is done right.
There are paid local ads that appear separately from the normal map results, but organic placement in the map pack itself isn't bought directly: it's earned through the profile, the data and the website's signals.
It helps, but it isn't mandatory. Businesses that travel to customers or work by appointment can also have a local presence by defining the area they serve instead of showing an address.
Start with the profile (does it exist, is it complete, is it verified), then confirm your details match everywhere, and only after that look at reviews and website signals. It's rare to be just one isolated cause.
